Toyota took inspiration from Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, who were the first people to climb Mt. Everest in 1953. Let me shorten the video Engine is solid, head gasket and leaks is the 4.0 main issues, especially rear main. Cooling is another thing to attend to. They are torque monsters, but stay away from oversized tires with out re gear Body, unibody. Has unibody problems Transmissions, decent. Both stick and auto Axles. The 35 is poor for longevity. 44 is the gold standard. Overall. They are robust vehicles with issues that is common for most older vehicles.

My 2015 C4S just got the same issue recently (6/4/2024). Initially I thought it’s the hard drive, so I’ve taken out the hard drive, yet issue still exists. Then I cloned the old drive to a newer SSD harddrive and replaced the old one….it didn’t work…anyone knows what’s wrong and how it can be fixed? Please share your info, thanks everyone!

When they made the front sleek and aerodynamic I used to have a joke that well.... if you hit a deer it might help it fly up over the top and land right in the bed of the truck! 😂 I was never a fan of this style. Love anything 1996 and back to the classic square body styles.

What's the chance of the "common problems" actually occuring? I kinda want to get an FJ80, but with them being slow as heck and possibly having some serious frame and suspension problems, that kinda scares me away from wanting it. Are they actually common problems? Or are they more rare?

They really hit a sweet spot in truck history. They were the first trucks to offer modern essentials, like fuel injection, crew cabs, computer aided design, wind-tunnel testing, etc. They were the first trucks to offer 4WD in a way that hit the zeitgeist. Despite the advances, they still possessed GM's time-tested and indestructible drivetrain: big block + TH400 + 14-bolt axle, + NP205 transfer case + manual locking front hubs. They were also still relatively simple and easy to fix. Unlike the previous generation, square bodies were enormously capable, coming with tough leaf spring rear axles and the almighty 454 big block. 4x4 trucks got robust, solid front axles. Plastic was used minimally, while everything else was plate steel or cast iron. My dad drove a '79 C20 from the time I was 7 until I was in my mid-20s. He didn't maintain it well, and he worked construction, so it was no cream puff. It survived my brothers jumping it, blowing up the transmission doing burnouts, running it into a tree while playing Dukes of Hazzard in the fig orchards near our house, launching a camper full of tools off the back while trying to make a traffic light, endless racing, etc. It had several engine fires, was in constant danger of being impounded over back registration fees, and eventually was abandoned in the back yard for a decade or so before being dragged off to the scrap yard. Even so, it always started right up. You couldn't kill these trucks. I daily drive an '89 V2500 Suburban today. It's still easy to fix, has tremendous aftermarket support, is tough as nails, always gets praise from random people in parking lots (even though its a beater) and never fails to put a big grin on my face every time I get in. Just excellent, excellent trucks.

Best trucks ever. Mine developed the head gasket oil leak. I used the updated felpro head gasket to repair it, and used an aluminum intake from a 99 expedition with the improved design felpro gaskets as well. Also I torque my spark plugs to spec haha. But it’s pretty easy to avoid those issues and bullet proof these engines, although most don’t need it they go 500k easy with good maintenance. These are great trucks and everyone who’s owned one can agree.

These pickups were reliable if properly maintained and really easy to work on yourself. I'm in the process of replacing the upper/lower control arms bushings, ball joints, stabilizer links, wheel bearings, seals, races, brakes, and wheel cylinders under my 1989 Chevy Cheyenne, 3500. It has the SB 350 TBI engine and a standard 4 speed granny transmission. No oil leaks or burning and it runs well. It's a pickup that's easy to work on compared to today's vehicles. It's my daily driver as well. The parts are very inexpensive, readily available, and for me it's an easy DIY project as I grew up around these vehicles. The clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing were replaced in 2023 as were the clutch slave cylinder and hydraulic line, so when I'm done this pickup should make it a couple more decades at least.. I'm in my 60's so it may be my last pickup and I'm the third owner.

I currently own 3 GM vehicles from this generation: A 2005 Suburban 2500HD (8.1), a 2002 Silverado 1500, and - the crown jewel - a 2004 Hummer H2 Luxury package. I bought the Suburban with 110k miles (it currently has 210k), the Silverado with 137k (it currently has 179k), and the Hummer with 53k (it currently has 79k). I daily drive all three, and have done many long-distance road trips and family outings in both the Suburban and the Hummer. I occasionally tow with all three (nothing very heavy), and have done a fair amount of light off-roading with the Suburban and the Hummer. I used to have a 2003 Suburban 1500. I gave it to my daughter with 275k miles on it. It currently has 320k miles, and she is still driving it. These four vehicles have proven to be the toughest, and most reliable vehicles I have ever owned by FAR, in my total 35-ish years of vehicle ownership. In the case of the Suburban's specifically, also the most versatile and useful. GM really knocked it out of the park in the early 2000's.
